The Future of Mars exploration

Mars is the next destination for humans, but there are still some big challenges to overcome to get there. One of the most challenging aspects of Mars missions is the safe landing on the surface—from an initial entry speed of 30,000 miles per hour to a soft touchdown. During the descent to the surface, robots and, eventually, people are protected from extreme temperatures and G-forces by complexly engineered systems. On the surface, future explorers must be able to survive radiation and low pressures, with only the limited resources they can bring along. This talk will discuss the motivation for Mars exploration and how engineering challenges are tackled with computational modelling, cutting-edge technologies, and out-of-the-box thinking. Engineering the Red Planet is the key to our future and to understanding our past.

Why is ion propulsion the next big thing for satellites?

How can we create cheaper, cleaner, smaller propusion systems for the thousands of nanosats cruising over our head? The answer is simple: electricity! Constellations of nanosats are currently cruising above our heards. Those small devices needs propulsion to navigate and fullfill their missions. Yet thrusters are often heavy, toxic and are relying too much on fuel. Accion systems built the next-generation ion thruster and it's as tiny as the nanosats themselves!

Giving autonomous cars super-human reflexes

Autonomous cars are under intense scrutiny. Engineers know that they have zero room for error. Ethics and trolley problems are now common questions as we imagine (and begin to see) autonomous vehicles roaming around our cities' streets. But what if we could make their inner workings more human-like? What if we could give them reflexes?

Mobility shaping cities and vice-versa?

From the checkerboard plan and right-angled intersections to the sineous small streets of old cities, our vision of our urban environment is inherently linked to our means of transports. As autonomous vehicles, free floating bikes and flying taxis are popping up everywhere, as the slow exodus from the countryside to cities carries one, we are faced with a conundrum. Should we still shape our cities around our transportation or should we try it the other way around? What kind of concrete impact will the new mobility solutions have on our cities?

Design Fiction for Corporate strategies

This workshop strives to show how design fiction methods can be used to uncover blind spots in corporate strategies for future topics.  Design: how can we ideate and design fictions with or for corporates? Debate: how can fictions be used to evaluate possible futures, to elicit hope, concerns and thoughts on a future? Public: consultants for innovation and digital technology projects, Chief Innovation Officer & Chief Technology Officer, Digital Marketing Specialist, Product Manager, Business Development Manager, and other roles in Corporate Management. We are a bunch of designers, makers, anthropologists, futurists and economists that love playing with the future(s) : Making Tomorrow: Because what is going to happen is never really new, but rarely what we expect, Making Tomorrow helps organizations imagine and prototype their future in order to test its frontiers. And be ready, as of tomorrow. onepoint x weave: We are an augmented consulting collective, acting as a Pioneer & Maker. With an uninhibited relationship to technology and a strong belief in addressing the market differently, onepoint x weave is shaking up the consulting world.

Give your science a voice

The accurate translation of cutting edge science and engineering will be increasingly dependent on the ability of experts to contextualize their own knowledge with narrative. Scientists and engineers, doctors and physicists, roboticist and programmers need a deep understanding not only of their own research, but of communication frameworks and digital storytelling practices. Nadja Oertelt, science media storyteller and co-founder of Massive Science, will provide a toolkit for science storytelling that prioritizes trust, truth, community, and impact, useful for researchers, journalists, and entrepreneurs.

Recycling for a greener gold

Who knew we had so much gold in our pockets? The yellow metal is an integral element of our electronic devices such as cellphones, laptops and so on. Yet only about 30% of it is recycled nowadays, due to toxic or inneficient methods. Seems quite a waste, doesn't it? That's what Euan Doidge thought as well! So, what if we could do more and truly tap into this urban gold mine?
